You Know Youre a Martial Artist When

  • There are certain things that you just find yourself doing, or saying, or thinking when martial arts becomes a part of your life. It colors everything you do from making the guys at Home Depot wonder about all that pine board you go through, to the inappropriate KYAP in the grocery store. Read on and find out how many of these you can see yourself nodding along with:
    1. You groan and critique the fight scenes in every martial arts movie.
    2. You turn the lights on and off with kicks or strikes.
    3. Your kitchen cabinets are missing handles from the kicks.
    4. You KYAP instead of OUCH! when you stub your toe.
    5. Your instructors have their own ringtone on your phone.
    6. Your instructor is on your voice-call app.
    7. You can walk barefoot on your driveway on the hottest day of the year.
    8. You buy Tiger Balm – Costco size.
    9. The guy at the local lumber yard has YOU on speed dial.
    10. You can get into vehement arguments over Tiger Balm vs. Ben Gay.
    11. Watch re runs of all Bruce Lee & John Claude Van Dam movies every chance you get
    12. You have a Wave bag in your living room
    13. You have a folder on your desktop with over 2 gigabytes of martial arts memes like this:

    14. Most of your best friends have hit you, kicked you, choked you, or thrown you across a room – and you’re still friends.
    15. Your daughter’s fave Disney princess is Mulan.
    16. You double knot your bathrobe belt and make sure the ends line up.
    17. You have a binary pattern for knowing what day of the week it is: Class Night and Not Class Night.
    18. You start to develop a highly sensitive BS filter when someone talks about all the fights he’s won and what a badass he is.
    19. You know that “McD’s” is not McDonald’s.
    20. You and your class have performed Tai Kwan Leep: Boot to the Head at least once.
    21. You know Tai Kwan Leep: Boot to the Head by heart.
    22. Your five year-old bows in.
    23. When the new student at the school look up to you.
    24. When you correct people who call Tae Kwon Do a hobby, and you tell them it’s a way of life.

When you live by the Five Tenets of Tae Kwon Do – Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit – it’s an experience that changes you for life and changes your life. Whether you are young or old, male or female, you are not learning how to fight, you are learning how to live. Tae Kwon Do has a lot to teach everyone, at every place in their life – including how to laugh at themselves.

We hope that you got a laugh out of these examples, but it would be really great for you readers to add to the list either in the comments or on our Facebook page. Go ahead and jump in – we’d love to hear from you.
